As founded in 1892 and joined the Football League in 1893, the Liverpool Football Club based in Liverpool, Merseyside. A New Stadium Rather Than A Bigger Player List Should Be Chelsea’s Priority.

Despite their fantastic domestic record this season, a squad full of international players and a bank account that most teams can only dream about, Chelsea’s current owner Roman Abramovich faces a complex issue over the next couple of years. The issue facing Abramovich is that despite his vast personal wealth and his willingness to spend it on the team, every season Chelsea finish it is likely to see a balance sheet in the red.

Maintaining Chelsea’s involvment in it’s younger squads, signing new players as well as the large amounts paid to existing players in the squad as part of their contract agreements are costs which cannot be wholly offset by the sale of soccer merchandise, season ticket sales, player sales and corporate sponsorship deals. With UEFA adopting stringent new rules by 2012, meaning that all participants in their competitions must be run within stringent financial rules, Chelsea needs to find a way to increase their earnings while remaining in European soccer’s elite.

Measures to decrease the debt began in earnest last summer when several top division players were either released or sold. Manager Carlo Ancelotti chose to release or transfer several established players from the top squad, such as Ricardo Carvalho, Joe Cole, Deco, Juliano Belletti and Michael Ballack and replace them with youth promoted from the Chelsea junior ranks. This cutting of staff successfully had the effect of reducing the wage bill, but even these cuts have not fully resolved the issue of club debt.

Chelsea’s owner has spent huge amounts of cash in the past aimed to help the club achieve his ambition of the Londoners being considered as not only the greatest club in England, but the entire world. This status at the moment is held by either Manchester United, Barcelona or Real Madrid, depending on which criteria you wish to use and there are several key reasons why Chelsea have been unable to compete with these three established teams:

  • The size of their home stadium compared to the size of the competing big three.
  • The fact the club trails behind the other three in terms of merchandising, worldwide.

The most obvious issue to address; the seating capacity of the stadium and the revenue it brings to the club, could well be set to be addressed shortly. Speculation has it that Stamford Bridge may soon be condemned to being part of Chelsea’s history, rather than the cornerstone of their future. Specific details remain unknown but there is fresh talk that Chelsea may move in the near future to a shiny new, 60,000 seat capacity stadium which will then become the foundation for the club attempting to becoming truly the largest club in world.

The proposed new ground and its higher capacity will have a instantaneous, positive effect on improving Chelsea’s financial problems. A greater capacity, if filled for each home game, will result in Chelsea turning over far more a year in gate receipts. The extra revenue from a new ground will be incredibly beneficial in helping the club adhere to the new set of rules the UEFA wants in use in time for the start of the 2012 season. Also, building a new home ground will enable Chelsea to organize a lucrative sponsorship deal over the name of the ground, as fellow Premier League team Arsenal did when selling the naming rights to Emirates stadium.

Merchandising sales could also be positively enhanced by a new stadium, bigger gates means more fans and this will have a continuing effect in other overseas markets, hopefully those in East Asia and North America.

If Chelsea are ever to realize their owners dreams, the time has arrived for them to stop wasting money on high transfer fees and wages and invest in the infrastructure of the club. If Chelsea truly desire ambitions to become the world’s biggest soccer club, then developing their Stamford Bridge ground is the first and most critical step they must take in order to achieve that.

Chelsea’s Star Players

When you have a squad that is so packed with talented individuals, it seems churlish to even suggest that there are around four or five players who generally make the team tick. Without these players Chelsea just wouldn’t be on the same level.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry is captain of club and country and he sets the benchmark which the other Chelsea players adhere to. A skilful and brave defender, what often gets lost in the plaudits given to Terry is that he is a very technically sound defender. Always a danger at set pieces and never afraid to lead by example, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

Every time he lines up against the Gunners he may be booed openly by Arsenal fans, despite the criticism Ashley Cole is still considered by many to be the best left back in the world. Certainly he has struggled for form and confidence at times, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. noone else managers to keep players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quite during games. That’s not luck, not many other left backs could do the job.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Essien’s injury last season showed how sorely he could be missed,even in a team filled with a world class midfield. Essien gives the midfield wonderful balance. He is a technically gifted soccer player with a great work rate and defensive skill. With a powerful shot from a distance and the ability to go forward at the right time making him an asset to the team. At today’s prices the 24.4 million pounds that it cost to buy him looks like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Who wouldn’t want a player like Lampard in the midifled scoring handfuls of goals. He has shown a great return to form under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti and as a result his goal tally has been increasing dramatically. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

There are many who believe that Didier Drogba is the finest attacker in world at the moment, and on current form, it is hard to dispute that. Didier Drogba wearing the latest Chelsea soccer jersey makes all goalkeepers fear the upcoming game. He may argue with officials and opposing players and fall over at the slightest touch but at times he can be unstoppable. His presence, goals and power are a key element of Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea and at times this season, he has carried the team on his back. His form is vital for Chelsea if they are to end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier league.

Should Michael Owen Be On The Team

The move of Michael Owen from Newcastle United to Manchester last Summer was unexpected and surprising, mainly due to Michael’s injury prone history.

Many experts were left confused by the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson. After Ronaldo’s transfer, most people expected that a big name would automatically pop in to Manchester United apparel to take over for him. Instead, United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who for the past five years has been beset by injury problem after injury problem and who was not only struggling for fitness, but form too. The fact that he is a former Liverpool player only adds insult to injury. There were a few bemused faces around Old Trafford the day the deal was announced.

When the finer details of the agreement were released it became clear that Alex Ferguson had, as always had a plan. Michael Owen is signed on a pay if you play contract at Manchester United and he was intended to be used from the bench. He did not have to hold the whole team up with his striking abilities, he is being used from the bench when the team needs him.

A slow start for Owen was not helped by the fact that he hardly featured in many games and if he did, he was a late substitute. Michael Owen’s last minute goal against Manchester City showed the role Alex Ferguson had planned for him in the team. The last minute goal even brought up talks of a spot in the England team, and everyone expected Michael Owen to gain a more prominent spot in the United team.

However since then, it hasn’t really worked out for Owen. Only managing to score four goals from eighteen games this season (many of which he only appeared as a substitute however), Doubt is starting to spread on Alex Fergusons decision to transfer Michael Owen and how long he has left in the team.

Owen’s chances of regaining a place in the England team are getting slimmer by the day it seems. Fabio Capello has repeatedly reiterated the need for players to be fit and playing regularly in order to play.Over the past few years Owen  has managed to be neither of these things. Capello however does not seem to be consistent with all the players in the England squad, Emile Heskey it seems is a shoe-in in every squad, regardless of whether he plays for Aston Villa or not.

The high point of the experiment so far has been Owen’s last minute goal against City.Owen needs to find goals and consistency over the remainder of the season or it seems unlikely that Alex Ferguson will continue his experiment onto the next season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. It’s up to Owen to prove he still has the fitness and ability to stay in the team, at the moment however, it seems likely that Sir Alex’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
